A state agency's plan to clear-cut portions of a forest near a waterfront subdivision has a group of residents concerned about potential declines in property values, negative environmental impacts and wildfires. In January, the Virginia Department of Forestry embarked on a plan to harvest sections of Bourassa State Forest, a 288-acre mixed hardwood/pine forest located at the entrance to Cedar Key, a residential development in Huddleston.

Roger Harper, principal of RHarper Consulting Group, recommends getting at least three bids and having each contractor explain to you how he would approach the work. Get three customer references, at a minimum, from each contractor, as well as a bank and an insurance reference. Who is Stanley Fish to tell us how to write and read a sentence? Well, for starters, he has been the dean of liberal arts and sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago, has taught at Duke, Johns Hopkins and Berkeley universities, and today he is the Davidson-Kahn distinguished university professor and a law professor at Florida International University. OK, but university professors are not, by definition, writers of clear, sparkling prose. Then consider this: He has written 12 books and is a weekly columnist for the New York Times. You know this is going to be a serious book, but it's heartening to see that the author has a sense of humor. He begins the book with this quatrain from Kenneth Koch's poem "Permanently":
