On April 13, a classified ad on Craigslist.org offered a rental property on Royal Street. For $195 a night, plus a one-time cleaning fee of $100, the two- bedroom, one-bath home could sleep eight people in the French Quarter.
A South Side nonprofit that for years has boosted business and cleaned up East Carson Street plans to dissolve next summer, but it's working with neighborhood groups to gauge interest in creating an improvement district that could provide similar services and possibly more. The South Side Local Development Co. wants to help the community have a conversation about whether it would like to form an improvement district that could provide services beyond those the city of Pittsburgh performs, such as additional security or cleaning services, for a self-imposed fee.
Dear Amy: We own a vacation home that we occasionally rent out. It's not a rental machine, but we do try to screen tenants and rent it a few times a month to help with the mortgage. We rent it for $165 a night plus a cleaning a fee - three-night minimum. The expenses run $1,000 a month. A few years ago, our neighbors asked if they could rent it for a long weekend with another out-of-town couple. We gave them a reduced "friends and family rate" of $100 a night, and all was good. The next year, they asked again but asked if they could "use it" - not rent it. We felt obliged to say OK, but asked them to pay for the cleaning service.
The Mt. Washington Community Development Corp. quietly dropped its efforts to establish a Neighborhood Improvement District, citing opposition to the idea of charging businesses and property owners for extra police and cleaning services. Property owners within such districts pay a monthly fee to cover services such as safety patrols, marketing and litter and graffiti cleanup. But in Mt. Washington, people at two public meetings overwhelmingly spoke against the proposal and the group decided to drop it, Executive Director Chris Beichner said.

Say you log onto Expedia or Orbitz, search for the lowest airfare from Chelm, Poland, to Kampen, Netherlands, and see a fare of just $199 on Grace L. Ferguson Airlines, $100 less than any other line. So you click on the "buy" button, but after you enter all your stuff, you come to a "total price" screen that displays what you really have to pay: $199 base airfare, plus $64 "fuel surcharge," $42 "retired employees' pension fund contribution," $26 "interest on airline debt," $22 "executive bonus fee" and $9 "lavatory cleaning fee." That $199 airfare just morphed into a $362 hit on your charge card, a total that may well be higher than what you'd have paid with an airline that priced its flights honestly. Don't laugh: that's just the way some airlines want to present airfares. They're push...
MORGANTOWN - Cleaning out a crowded notebook and a cluttered mind while wondering how often I'm going to find myself in Boise and Dallas, not to mention Colorado Springs and Annapolis: It's far from a done deal, of course. The Big East presidents approved a proposal to up the league's exit fee from $5 million to $10 million late Monday night, contingent upon either Navy or Air Force - or both - agreeing to join. Still, even if that hurdle is cleared, there's no guarantee all of the schools on the league's wish list will agree to come aboard.
