CLAXTON, Ga. - When the once-sandy white shores of the Canoochee River turned slimy green in 1998, residents traced the problem to excess nutrients flowing from spray fields operated by Claxton Poultry. They sued. In an out-of-court settlement, the chicken processor admitted no fault in its wastewater operation but agreed, among other stipulations, to fund $150,000 in startup costs for the Canoochee Riverkeeper.
