The Pink Panther franchise, as anyone with a long memory or a working DVD player knows, was initiated by Blake Edwards in 1963 and has had numerous spin-offs - sequels, the cartoon series featuring the hammer-headed pink feline, and, of course, merchandise (there's even a Web site for fans of the cartoons, and a Pink Panther Museum in Santa Rosa).
