Wrestling's postseason is here. The top five finishers in Classes AA and A (large schools) and the top four in Classes B, C and D (small schools) in the Class tournaments will earn berths to the Section VI championships Feb. 12 at Lake Shore (Division I) and East Aurora (Division II). Pioneer, Albion and Cheektowaga are now small schools. Wrestling in the Class Tournaments will start Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m. Admission is $5 per session. Here's a look at some of the favorites by class:
The teams that will challenge Bangor and Stearns of Millinocket for state football championships in Classes A and C on Saturday both have a sense of newness about them. Western Maine Class A titlist Cheverus of Portland is a newcomer of sorts to the state title game experience, reaching the final for the first time in 25 years.
The state high school golf team championships, normally held on a Saturday, have been moved to Monday (Columbus Day) because of the Jewish holiday, Yom Kippur. The tournament will be played at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro, beginning with a 10 a.m. shotgun start on Natanis' two courses, Arrowhead and Tomahawk. Team champions in classes A, B and C will be crowned.
After millions of dollars in infrastructure investment and years of sharply scrutinized teacher performance, D.C. officials say it's time for students to step up their game this school year. We are expecting great things from you," schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson told an assembly of ninth-graders Monday at Eastern High School in a joint appearance with Mayor Vincent C. Gray to mark the first day of classes.
The 2010 ended in storybook fashion for the Telstar of Bethel and Richmond softball teams, with the Rebels and Bobcats claiming state championships in Classes C and D, respectively. Those two teams are in position to defend those crowns, with Telstar representing Class C in the state title game for the third consecutive year when coach Jim Lunneys club battles Dexter at 7 p.m. in Brewer Saturday.
Mutual Funds that have a "load," that is a charge associated with investing in the fund, are generally sold in three classes: A, B and C. They differ in the commission the broker is paid by the buyer, when it is paid, and the size and duration of annual fees taken by the fund company. Class A funds are front-loaded. There is an up-front commission that is a percentage of the amount of the purchase. Annual fees, such as management fees and 12b-1 fees, are charged for fund maintenance, sales and distribution. No commission is charged on redemption, although there may be redemption fees charged.
Maine's top high school cross country teams will be able to compete in the New England championships beginning next fall based on a vote Thursday by the Maine Principals' Association. After turning down similar proposals in 2002 and 2004, members of the MPA's Interscholastic Division agreed by a three-vote margin from approximately 50 schools that were represented to allow six boys teams and six girls teams from the state to participate in the annual New England Cross Country Championships starting with the 2005-06 school year.
Miss C created a webpage for the project with a bibliography of multimedia resources and the packet students used to organize their work (visuals, graphic organizers, guides for their interviews, the schedule of library visits, formative assessments including a proposal form for focusing the thesis of the paper, a rubric for the students' rough drafts, a peer review form, and bibliography charts). The teacher failed to show up for the scheduled library time after all the preliminary planning and collaboration with Miss C. Another social studies teacher, who is retiring next year, schedules her classes in the library media center but never collaborates with Miss C and does not even drop her lesson plan off in the library media center at least one day prior to the class visit.
