Joining the jazz musicians this weekend for the 19th annual Charlie Christian International Jazz Festival will be the Detroit jazz quintet Straight Ahead. The festival is scheduled Friday and Saturday at NE 36th Street and N. Lincoln Boulevard. The festival is sponsored by Black Liberated Arts Center Inc. (BLAC). Nine other bands from Kansas City, Los Angeles, Dallas, Tulsa and Oklahoma City also will be performing during the festival. The Detroit group, scheduled to perform Saturday, was a finalist in the 1989 Sony Innovators competition and has five albums to its credit. Classen School of Advanced Studies Jazz Band will open the festival and Little Milton will conclude it. For additional information, call 524-3800.
Seventy-five. Count them, 75. That's how many kids are onstage in the Thelma Gaylord Academy presentation of Oliver at Civic Center Music Hall. Well, actually, the hit Broadway musical is by Lyric Theatre, a grown-ups' organization, but Lyric Artistic Director Michael Baron certainly makes good use of the young people enrolled in Lyric's academy. They are so cute and so professional and so loud. What fun to watch them parading and singing and dancing. Associate Director Ashley Wells choreographed the entire show so well and keeps all those kids - plus 13 stars and 12 ensemble members - from running into each other, especially in the rousing tune Food, Glorious Food.
