An attorney for a Washington County man on death row for murdering an Upper St. Clair grandmother argued to the state Supreme Court on Wednesday that his client deserves a new trial because the trial judge improperly limited his right to testify on his own behalf.
An Allegheny County jury sentenced Patrick Stollar, now 33, of Washington, to death for killing Jean Heck, 78, days after he landscaped her yard. Stollar defended himself in the guilt phase of the trial, arguing he was mentally ill at the time of the June 4, 2003, killing.

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) - An Illinois State Police trooper was indicted on reckless homicide charges Friday after grand jurors found his freeway speeds said to top 120 mph were excessive when his patrol cruiser swerved into an oncoming car, killing two teenage sisters.
State Police, who investigated the Nov. 23 wreck, recommended in January that prosecutors charge Trooper Matt Mitchell with reckless homicide. But Bob Haida, St. Clair County's state's attorney, deferred to the grand jury, which returned one reckless homicide count for each of the sisters.
