On a freshly paved stretch of South Claiborne Avenue, developer Kevin Keller is putting the finishing touches on what he calls the world's costliest Family Dollar. The $2.8-million store cost roughly double that of a typical Family Dollar location, said Keller, who has built more than a dozen stores for the Charlotte, N.C.-based discount retailer.
Claiborne Avenue has seen its share of hard times, but a scheduled $1.6 million makeover appears to be on a fast track for the stretch between Napoleon Avenue and Martin Luther King Boulevard. Once details are finalized, All South Consulting Engineers will draft a final design plan with construction expected to begin in early 2010.
City-Works and the American Institute of Architects will play host to a public meeting on redevelopment of South Claiborne Avenue at 6:30 p.m. today at Dryades YMCA, 2220 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd. AIA and City-Works have assembled a Sustainable Design Assessment Team of national experts in urban planning, transportation planning, economics and commercial development. Tonight's meeting kicks off a series of three sessions to detail previous plans for environmentally and economically sustainable redevelopment of South Claiborne Avenue.
Public meetings are planned on redeveloping South Claiborne Avenue and Lakeview. City-Works and the American Institute of Architects will hold the South Claiborne meetings at 6:30 p.m. Monday and at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 14 at Dryades YMCA, 2220 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd. National experts in urban planning, economics, commercial development and transportation planning will join city officials and the public to plan the redevelopment of South Claiborne.
I witnessed something surreal last Saturday morning. A U.S. senator was mixing with constituents on the street. It was on Deslonde Street, north of Claiborne Avenue, in the most deserted and overgrown section of the Lower 9th Ward. There were no handlers to shoo away undesirables. No television cameras. No glad- handing.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a $27 million contract to provide increased drainage for the Carrollton area with canal improvements along South Claiborne Avenue between Monticello Avenue and Leonidas Street. Baton Rouge-based Cajun Constructors Inc. will build about 2,500 feet of covered canal and relocate sewer and water lines.
Two recent polls on neworleanscitybusiness.com show a rather interesting environment in New Orleans as Mayor Mitch Landrieu reaches his first six months in office. Two weeks ago, we asked our readers if they agreed with the mayor's call to roll back property millages to increase the city's tax revenues. A week later, we asked where they stood on tearing down the elevated Interstate 10 over Claiborne Avenue, an idea the Landrieu administration has touted as a way of rejuvenating the once- vibrant neighborhood.
The state's Department of Transportation and Development will hold an informational meeting on Thursday regarding upcoming road repairs on City Park Avenue from Canal Street to Orleans Avenue, and Esplanade Avenue from Moss Street to North Claiborne Avenue. Construction on the road segments is expected to begin in late February to be complete in July.
Nathan Robertson's biggest problem isn't that he is homeless -- it's that he's not an alcoholic or a junkie. Mike Miller, director of supportive housing placement for Unity of Greater New Orleans, found Robertson, 62, living under the Claiborne Avenue overpass in April. He figured the easiest way to get the disabled military veteran help was to contact the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' homeless program.
Two five-month streetscape improvement projects in the Lower 9th Ward are expected to start by January. Plus Concrete Inc. of New Haven, Mich., was the apparent low bidder earlier this month on the projects that will improve North Claiborne Avenue from Andry to Lamanche streets and St. Claude Avenue from the St. Claude Bridge to Egania Street.
