After a strong start, early voting numbers for the Charleston general election have dropped significantly, and officials hope the number of increases as Election Day draws closer.
Early voting numbers dropped from 190 on Wednesday to 30 on Thursday, according to figures provided by the city clerk's office. Tuesday saw 196 early voters.

WHITTIER - The Whittier Uptown Association's Wednesday night Family Fair has been approved by the City Council but negotiations must be finalized with the operator of the festival.
The council approved the event - with many stiffer conditions, including a doubling of security - on a 5-0 vote Tuesday.

LEWISTON -- A week after announcing that their taxis would be parked permanently, City Cab will be back on the road Wednesday under new ownership.
The Auburn-based company Ace Towing acquired the taxi service Tuesday morning and was working to clean the vehicles and rehire staff that afternoon, Ace Towing spokesman Roger Needham said Tuesday evening.

Long Beach. The Center for International Trade and Transportation's three-part seminar series on "Working and Living in a Port City" begins Wednesday at the CITT offices at 1000 Studebaker Road. The first part will be offered Wednesday, with the other two following Jan. 18 and 19. All courses are from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
