Studebaker Corporation was a Michigan corporation that, beginning in the 1850s, produced wagons and later automobiles in the city of South Bend, IN. After Studebaker stopped manufacturing automobiles in South Bend, the facilities were used for a variety of other operations. In the early 1990s, the city conducted an environmental evaluation of the premises and found there were environmental releases affecting the soil and groundwater at those facilities and grounds. As the owner of significant portions of the former Studebaker facilities, the city filed a complaint for damages and declaratory relief against Certain Underwriters at Lloyd's, London, and Certain London Market Insurance Companies, Century Indemnity Company, and Zurich American Insurance Company (Insurers), the insurers alleg...

The recent events in Japan remind us that we are in a new time, one when we are shifting from an economy based on cheap, abundant energy to one that is much more energy-constrained.
I was recently in South Bend, Ind., giving a workshop to nearly 100 people, including representatives from the city, local businesses, Indiana University and the University of Notre Dame. There is a lot happening in South Bend, thanks in great part to the IU South Bend Center for a Sustainable Future.

A blast from Vanderburgh County's political past, Catherine Fanello's is keeping her wallet, if not her hand, involved in local politics, though she has dropped hints that she may return.
Fanello, former Democratic president of the County Commissioners and now city controller in South Bend, Ind., said she is considering returning after she finishes her pursuit of a law degree at Valparaiso University School of Law in 2011 or 2012.

This announcement contains the names of the awardees and the amounts of the awards made available by HUD in 2010. Rancho Palos Verdes has announced the reopening of some of the nature trails that were closed after a wildfire burned through the area in late August.
The trails to the south and west of the burn area, which was centered in the city's Portuguese Bend Reserve, have been reopened.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Jacqueline Batteast scored 18 of her 27 points in the second half and No. 11 Notre Dame used a 23-0 run to beat No. 6 Rutgers 63-47 on Sunday, giving coach Muffet McGraw her 400th career win with the Irish.
Batteast scored the first 12 points of the second half for Notre Dame (16-3, 4-2 Big East), which trailed by as many as 13. The Scarlet Knights (13-4, 4-1), who shot 47 percent in the first half, shot just 17 percent in the second.
