Eight nurses from Maine returned safely from Libya last week after delivering supplies and providing six days of instruction to understaffed hospitals in the rebel-controlled, seaside city of Benghazi.
Most of Libya's nurses, who were contracted from the Philippines and Cambodia, fled the country when civil war erupted there in February. So the American nurses taught medical students basic nursing skills such as CPR, inserting IVs and infection prevention techniques such as wearing gloves when handling wounds.

TRUCE FOR CHIEF...The city of Seaside and Police Chief Steve Cercone have reached a settlement that ends the months-long saga that began in August, when City Manager Ray Corpuz placed Cercone on paid administrative leave. The settlement, reached Dec. 18, awards Cercone more than $287,400; Cercone, in turn, agrees not to sue the city or seek employment with Seaside. [KA]

Glimmers of peace descended upon the ancient seaside city of Alexandria, Egypt, on Sunday, nearly two weeks into protests against the 30-year reign of President Hosni Mubarak. Mahmoud Darwish, 25, welcomes the peace, and the butcher. He is among many Egyptians longing for a return to normalcy.

LONG BEACH - A group of Chinese entrepreneurs toured Long Beach on Thursday during a trade mission to explore business and investment opportunities in manufacturing, law, media, green technology and arts.
