HARRISBURG, Pa., Aug. 4, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- More than $669,000 will be awarded to help firefighters in Pennsylvania's rural communities guard against the threat of fires in forests and other undeveloped areas, Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Richard J. Allan announced today. These funds will be distributed to 160 volunteer fire companies in rural areas and communities where forest and brush fires are common," Allan said. A communications glitch took fire alarm systems at numerous buildings in Allegheny County offline this week but did not lead to any delays in response to real emergencies, Pittsburgh fire officials said. Ray DeMichiei, the city's deputy director of emergency management and homeland security, said Marshall-based Guardian Protective Services notified the department that the systems were back on line Tuesday afternoon.

A recent fire that destroyed the Caddyshack restaurant and bar in South Union ignited a heated argument on Wednesday at Uniontown City Council meeting. Greensburg City Council approved on Monday an emergency purchase of an air compressor for the city fire department after the old piece of equipment was discovered to be inoperable and unserviceable.
