WHITTIER - No one was injured in a fire Wednesday that consumed half of a 1,900-square-foot duplex in the Michigan Park area of the city.
However, city officials "red-tagged" the property, 7930 Forest Ave., following the 11:16 a.m. fire, saying other issues than just the fire made it unsafe. The fire took Los Angeles County firefighters about 15 minutes to extinguish.

The Sabres won't be having a rookie camp in HSBC Arena this season, partly because of the ongoing locker room renovations but also because they're going to instead take their young players to Traverse City, Mich., for the first time and play in the NHL Prospect Tournament that has been run since 1998 in cooperation with the Detroit Red Wings' training camp.
The Sabres will be joining the Red Wings, Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues at the event, which runs Sept. 10-14. Count this as a big added expense on the scouting/development side under new owner Terry Pegula: Traverse City, a city of about 15,000 people, is in extreme northwest Michigan, a four-hour drive from Detroit.

During that time, Peake claims to have processed 12 loan applications worth more than $7 million for property in some of Detroit's predominately Black neighborhoods. Peake says all the loans were denied because they were located in areas that were "not desirable based upon National City criteria." Other financial institutions picked up all 12 loans after they were denied by National City.
In 2004, National City originated 339 SBA loans in Michigan-of those, 13 were originated for businesses in the city of Detroit," said [David L. Rose]. "National City Corporation originated 350 Small Business Administration loans (2003-04) totaling $27.743 million in Detroit. Twenty-four, or...
