  • LOMA LINDA - After an hour of discussion, the City Council decided Tuesday night not to have staff look into a possible ban on drive thru restaurants.Councilman Stan Brauer suggested the idea, saying it might be a way to make the city uniquely healthy and environmentally friendly. I've already read the tea leaves, and I don't know if I'll get any support from the council or how much support I'll get from the community," Brauer said as he brought forward the proposal as an agenda item. "My only intent tonight was to have a general discussion.

  • disappointed with the Loma Linda City Council's approval of the for-profit hospital ("LL council approves hospital,' by Jacob Ogles, Sept. 7). Nowhere did I see any comments about what is best for the community at large. No one ever said the doctors that will be providing care at this facility were bad, incompetent doctors. The concern is the motivation of those associated with this facility.

  • LOMA LINDA - Four of the City Council's five members now work for the same employer, renewing the debate about the city's close ties to its largest institution. Councilman Ovidiu Popescu started working this week for Loma Linda University Medical Center as an occupational therapy assistant helping home care patients.

  • LOMA LINDA - City officials hope to preserve a slice of the past in the midst of hundreds of tract homes. Plans are moving forward to create a historic village on the north side of Mission Road between California Street and Mountain View Avenue.

  • LOMA LINDA - The city is exploring the possibility of trading for or purchasing the site of the old Mission School to build a commercial project. The school site, on the southwest corner of Redlands Boulevard and California Street, is owned by the Redlands Unified School District. The school opened in 1937 and closed in 1994.

  • LOMA LINDA - The city's financial picture could get cloudier because of the state budget crisis. City Manager Dennis Halloway said the city might lose $870,770 if the state decides to take local government funds to balance the budget.

  • LOMA LINDA - Last year, the City Council decided that a chunk of land in the hills would be off limits to development. The citizens agreed, overwhelmingly approving a ballot measure to permanently protect nearly 1,700 acres in the South Hills Preserve. The initiative came on the heels of Measure V, a slow-growth law passed by city voters in 2006.

  • LOMA LINDA - Seeking to reduce a deficit of affordable housing, the City Council has approved an agreement for a 120-unit apartment project. The city's Redevelopment Agency will lease for 65 years a roughly 6.5-acre site on Poplar Street to a nonprofit developer for the two- and three-bedroom project.

  • LOMA LINDA - After weeks of delays, the City Council on Tuesday is set to fill a vacancy on the Planning Commission. Seven candidates have applied to finish the term Frank Povero, who abruptly resigned in August. Povero's term expires in June 2009.

  • LOMA LINDA - The city wants to acquire a large expanse of open space in the hills, but officials are unsure how to do it. To help with the process, the City Council on Tuesday night agreed in concept to hire a consultant to figure out a plan for obtaining hundreds of acres of private land.
