The city of Hesperia will take the lead in the design, development and construction of a new county government center in the High Desert.
The $29.2 million, 66,900-square-foot High Desert Government Center will be located on the northwest corner of Smoke Tree Street and Seventh Avenue. Construction is slated to begin in the summer and completion is expected in September 2010.

A former Hesperia city councilman and father of the High Desert city's former mayor is jailed in Washington state, where he pleaded guilty last year to first-degree rape of a child.
Theron Honeycutt, 67, is serving a 180-day sentence in Clark County Jail in Vancouver, Wash. He was sentenced Sept. 28 and is scheduled to be released Feb. 9.

HESPERIA - A record city budget of $126 million for the current fiscal year includes $51.2 million for major capital improvements that range from a new Civic Plaza to design work for a long- envisioned south side underpass.
The budget, up 83percent from last year's $68.8 million financial measure, calls for outlays of $4.5 million for design and engineering costs, plus $3 million for initial construction, for the Ranchero Road underpass.

Look around the average neighborhood in Fontana and you'll likely see plenty of Latino faces. Look at the Fontana City Council dais, and you'll see none.
It's the same in Upland, Highland, Hesperia and other San Bernardino County cities that have large Latino populations but few if any Latino elected officials.

A motorcyclist killed in a crash in Big Bear City on Wednesday has been identified as Cheryl Hightower, 65, of Hesperia.
Hightower was riding a 1997 Harley-Davidson west on North Shore Drive at Greenway Drive at 7:30 a.m. Walter Campbell, 60, of Big Bear City was driving a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee north on Greenway Drive when he failed to stop at a stop sign, the California Highway Patrol said.

Sheriff's deputies have arrested a driver on suspicion of striking and killing a pedestrian in Hesperia on Tuesday.
Megan Vasquez, 22, was held on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter. Her passenger, Christin Briggs, 21, of Big Bear City, was also arrested on suspicion of helping Vasquez conceal her involvement in the collision.
