The Capital City Striders' 27 years of existence has its advantages, especially for the city of Charleston.
For the second year in a row, the organization has qualified to play host to an AAU national qualifying track meet on June 16-19 at Laidley Field, an event expected to attract 800 school-age participants from North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin and West Virginia.

FOR more than 50 years, John Charnock served as a force for improvement in Charleston and the Kanawha Valley. He died Monday of a rare form of cancer at age 80.
Charnock served as municipal judge from 1967 to 1975 and as city attorney from 1987 to 1991. Suffice it to say the court system at any level has never had a more fair-minded judge with a better sense of humor.

What do Charleston and Banska Bystrica, Slovakia, have in common? More than you might imagine, it turns out. And if Chuck Daugherty has his way, residents of the two cities will be joining hands in the years to come under a sister cities alliance.
Both burgs lie at the heart of mining districts, Daugherty said, although the Slovaks found precious metals, not coal, beneath their feet.

Several reports again are indicating that Charleston could lose five post office branches due to the U.S. Postal Service's ongoing financial woes.
USPS spokeswoman Cathy Yaroksy said a decision should be made within a few months to close or consolidate 1,000 post office branches, stations and carrier sites in the country.
