PNC Financial Services Group Inc. and Citizens Bank on Tuesday placed moratoriums on new and pending home foreclosures, the first big Pittsburgh-area banks to aid mortgage holders struggling to make payments during the recession.
The moratorium on foreclosing on mortgages issued to "eligible" customers of PNC and its recently acquired National City Bank took effect yesterday and will continue through March 13, or until the start of an anticipated government loan-modification program, PNC said. The bank promised it would be "very aggressive" in modifying loans to distressed customers, including cutting rates, extending payback terms and devising payment plans for borrowers.
