In 2002, Janet Davis, professor of American Studies at the University of Texas-Austin, published a fascinating book titled "The Circus Age: Culture and Society Under the Big Top." In the book, she presents the circus culture of the late 1800s and early 1900s -- a time when railroad circuses would shut down entire towns and advertisements would choke main streets nationwide. The big thinkers spearheading this year's Citizen Jane Film Festival probably hope the same happens in Columbia this week. This year's film festival stretches to become "Cirque du Cinema" Friday through next Sunday. Citizen Jane Film Festival/Courtesy

Sometimes a private citizen - someone who has never run for office but has a vision and a political idea, someone who is both stubborn and insightful - can change the course of political history. Thomas Paine is an example of one such person. His words and ideas literally helped change the course of U.S. history. In 1776, his first two of four pamphlets, "Common Sense" and "The Crisis" - the latter beginning with the famous opening line, "These are the times that try men's souls" - have been credited with mobilizing public opinion to help motivate American colonists to fight the British in what was deemed to be an unwinnable war. They reportedly were read by a greater percentage of the population of the American colonies than the percentage that watches the Super Bowl today.
Lyndhurst-based Citizen Watch Company of America is reaping the rewards of being ahead of its time. The company has been "green" since the 1970s before it was a synonym for being environmentally friendly. It's surged past the competition to become the top-selling midpriced watch brand in the United States, fueled by sales of its light-powered Eco-Drive watches. The midprice segment includes watches priced between $100 and $800.
