Lions, tigers and elephants - staples of the American circus for more than a century - would be banned from the big top under new legislation proposed by House Democrats. Rep. James P. Moran, Virginia Democrat, is teaming up with Animal Defenders International and other activists to bar "exotic animals" from traveling shows, citing treatment during life on the road, which they denounce as inhumane.
Animal activists and celebrities launched a new effort Wednesday to protect exotic animals by taking the "traveling" out of traveling circuses. The proposed federal legislation would place sharp limits on the ability to transport lions, tigers and elephants around the country. Circuses say it would essentially shut down the animal portion of their shows.

I read the long article by Lerone Graham, "Even on a snowy day, the show must go on" (Jan. 31), elaborating on the trouble some people took to attend the Shrine Circus in bad weather and what pleasure it gave them, especially the children. Now the facts need to be brought out as to what's on the other side of the cute animal acts, "tigers jumping through hoops of fire," etc.
I stopped by the grocery store last night on my way home from work to have my tires rotated, rent a rug shampooer, get some dry cleaning done, have my tax return audited and prostate examined, give my confession to Father Murphy, check my stock portfolio, buy a yard of mulch and talk to my guidance counselor about changing my major. TO THE EDITORS: I drove by Buchanan Park recently and was saddened and shocked to see two camels pacing in the grass off Buchanan Avenue. The event was Community Days in Buchanan Park, but how camels are germane to culture and community in Dutch country, I have no idea.
