  • Lions, tigers and elephants - staples of the American circus for more than a century - would be banned from the big top under new legislation proposed by House Democrats. Rep. James P. Moran, Virginia Democrat, is teaming up with Animal Defenders International and other activists to bar "exotic animals" from traveling shows, citing treatment during life on the road, which they denounce as inhumane.

  • Animal activists and celebrities launched a new effort Wednesday to protect exotic animals by taking the "traveling" out of traveling circuses. The proposed federal legislation would place sharp limits on the ability to transport lions, tigers and elephants around the country. Circuses say it would essentially shut down the animal portion of their shows.

  • Maddox'8 "Last Stand" may be Tawana Brawley. This is quite different than Custer's Last Stand. It is the Black faces and not the pale faces that are in retreat and running for the tall grass. This is the history that will be written about Brawley. In 2009, there were no wagons to circle. The Civil Court of New York County claimed that it never received the subpoena, despite postal records showing its delivery to the court. New York is having its cake and eating it too. Brawley is a supposed "hoax." Yet, New York has sealed the Brawley files. In New York, there are two laws on the ownership of real property. If you are white and the victim is Black, it is "harmless error" if you are caught selling or renting real property when you lack a deed. Thus, a wrongful eviction is permissible. Th...

  • The Brooklyn-based artist, born Scott Tyler (he added "Dread" to his name to commemorate the Supreme Court's famous DredScott decision of 1857, which held that black slaves couldn't sue for their freedom because they weren't considered U.S. citizens), first emerged in 1989 as a self-described revolutionary at the Art Institute of Chicago. Later, he adds: "This is why people end up getting chased into the Belt Parkway by other people with baseball bats!"-referring to the 1987 death of Michael Griffith, a young black man who was struck by a car as he fled a mob of white men wielding baseball bats.

  • Union bosses who sat on Obama's shoulders while - at taxpayers' expense - he protected their healthcare and retirement plans in the fast and dirty bailouts of GM and Chrysler feel threatened by the Senate Finance Committee version of Obamacare because it imposes a large tax on the beneficiaries of those healthcare plans. [...] it can't.

  • SARASOTA, Fla. - Animal rights activists and shows like Cirque du Soleil could help push traditional tent circuses into the history books. Competition and the high cost of doing business have forced some locally based animal trainers to adapt and base their shows here permanently, reducing the need to take the show on the road. The circus as we know it is just about to make its final bow," said Kay Rosaire, owner of The Big Cat Encounter, Big Cat Habitat and nonprofit Gulfcoast Sanctuary in Sarasota.

  • LOS ANGELES -- Animal Defenders International's (ADI) successful campaign to end the use of animals in circuses is on the verge of achieving a second ...

  • I read the long article by Lerone Graham, "Even on a snowy day, the show must go on" (Jan. 31), elaborating on the trouble some people took to attend the Shrine Circus in bad weather and what pleasure it gave them, especially the children. Now the facts need to be brought out as to what's on the other side of the cute animal acts, "tigers jumping through hoops of fire," etc.

  • I stopped by the grocery store last night on my way home from work to have my tires rotated, rent a rug shampooer, get some dry cleaning done, have my tax return audited and prostate examined, give my confession to Father Murphy, check my stock portfolio, buy a yard of mulch and talk to my guidance counselor about changing my major. Thank goodness for Giant Eagle.

  • TO THE EDITORS: I drove by Buchanan Park recently and was saddened and shocked to see two camels pacing in the grass off Buchanan Avenue. The event was Community Days in Buchanan Park, but how camels are germane to culture and community in Dutch country, I have no idea.
