The administration of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said Friday that, for the time being, it will not move ahead with new tax-collection efforts against the growing trade in Native American-manufactured cigarettes and emphasized that it has no intention of sending state tax agents onto Indian territories.
Instead, state agents will focus on major brand-name cigarettes, which have generated increased sales tax revenue in the past month since an appeals court gave the approval for the state to end tax- free tobacco sales.

Hours after key wholesalers began cutting off supplies of major cigarette brands to Indian retailers, a state judge Tuesday temporarily halted the state's ability to collect taxes on those cigarettes.
But companies that have supplied the tobacco products to Indian tribes, most notably the Seneca Nation, say they believe the end is near and that the Cuomo administration soon will be able to collect the $4.35-per-pack excise tax that Albany has sought for the past generation.

JACKSON - Smokers who buy non-premium brand cigarettes would pay an extra tax - either 25 or 43 cents a pack - in Mississippi starting Wednesday under legislation approved in the opening hours Sunday of a special session called to adopt a $6.01 billion state budget.
