The Sunsation "Dominator" is a 32-foot, V-shaped projectile, powered by twin monstrous-cubic-inch engines capable of propelling the ton-and-half vessel at speeds illegal on most paved highways. It's built for the ocean, the preferred transport for a climactic scene from Miami Vice.
Why these vessels, nicknamed "cigarette boats," are allowed to ply Maine's inland waters is a good question.

While monitoring is not complete at most schools, including these three Southern California schools, EPA is providing early information about acrolein, a wide-spread pollutant that can irritate the eyes, nose and throat. Acrolein primarily, enters the air when things burn. There are many sources of acrolein, including fires; exhaust from cars, trucks, boats, planes, wood heating; and industrial boilers. Acrolein is also found in cigarette smoke and smoke from cooking animal fats. Preliminary results from the 40 schools that are monitoring for acrolein are similar to levels from air toxics monitors in other areas of the country. EPA anticipates that long-term levels of acrolein are likely to be elevated at most of the schools.
The initiative, which is monitoring 63 schools in 22 states, ...

I'm disgusted with all the negative press concerning "cigarette boats" on Maine's lakes. I think it's unfair to paint the picture that the size and speed capabilities of the Sunsation Dominator were the reason the accident occurred.
I believe it would be fair to wait and see what the investigation proves to have happened. If Raye Trott's boat was sitting in the middle of Long Lake without its lights on, would it have mattered that he was run into by boat traveling 70+ mph, or would the same tragic outcome have happened if his boat was run into by a cabin cruiser going 45 mph?

Three members of the Long Beach City Council made history this year when no one sought to challenge them in spring elections.
Second District Councilwoman Suja Lowenthal, 4th District Councilman Patrick O'Donnell and 8th District City Councilwoman Rae Gabelich were unopposed and will earn automatic re-election. Only 6th District Councilman Dee Andrews faces a challenge.

Mark Trouville, special agent in charge, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), had walked through the front door of the Phoenix Building west of the Miami International Airport countless times before, always walking fast past the right-hand corridor, making a beeline for the elevators to get out of the way in case the boss was coming around the corner. Now that would be him. He had not expected to be back in Miami. More than any other DEA field division, Miami depends on the military for support, and the Navy and the Coast Guard routinely act on DEA intelligence to intercept drug shipments at sea. There are fewer military assets supporting DEA now than there were 10 years ago, but seizures are considerably larger because DEA has become much better at developing good intelligence to dir...
