One of the weekly chores of the Colonial household was churning butter. Almost every home had at least one dairy cow that was milked daily. The fresh milk was poured into wide, flat, crock bowls for several hours allowing the cream to rise to the top. The cream was skimmed off and saved for churning day. The remaining milk was used for drinking, cooking or even for trading.
This butter churn swung from a frame until the butter separated from the buttermilk. The earliest swinging churns were containers made from animal hides and swung from poles.
