Family caregivers are the backbone of the long-term care system in Ohio. Almost 2 million Ohioans and one-quarter of U.S. adults care for an aging parent, relative or spouse, according to a study by AARP and the Family Caregiver Alliance.
Studies show three-quarters of people with disabilities or chronic illness, who remain in their homes, depend solely on family and friends to meet their day-to-day needs. Yet, most family caregivers receive no formal training, little help from medical professionals, scant information about how to find services for their loved one or for themselves and have no idea how to pay for it all.

--Possible New HIV-like Retrovirus in Blood Supply--
CORAL GABLES, Fla., Dec. 6, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In an unprecedented move, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) patients published a half-page ad in The Washington Post today. The ad brings attention to new, HIV-like retroviruses, including XMRV, which have been linked to CFS and aggressive prostate cancer, and have been detected in healthy blood donors. Now, they are adding their voice through a campaign th...

Twelve years ago, Andrew Sullivan, the gay and HIV-positive philosophe, penned a New York Times Magazine essay called "When Plagues End," hailing the end of the epidemic. He wrote: "The power of the newest drugs called protease inhibitors, and the even greater power of those now in the pipeline, is such that a diagnosis of H.I.V. infection is not just different in degree today than, say, five years ago. It is different in kind. It no longer signifies death. It merely signifies illness." At the time, his article engendered heated debate, but it wasn't long after that I heard someone in San Francisco refer to the AIDS epidemic that had "ended sometime around 1995." Perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised when, last month, the paper of record (in a story about the changing nature of the [C...
