The killing of a woman who was married, jailed and strangled in a matter of hours presents a new test for the Wisconsin Innocence Project, which has freed two men from prison but has never taken a wrongful conviction case to trial.
When the project overturned the murder conviction of Christopher Ochoa and the sexual assault conviction of Steven Avery, suspense in the courtroom was present but limited. The cases had taken years to develop, but after DNA evidence proved that neither man could have committed the crimes, a judge released them from prison.

Even [Richard Danziger]'s attorney, Berkley Bettis, didn't believe anything was awry. "I left that trial feeling the state had proved beyond a reasonable doubt that my client was guilty," Bettis later told Texas Monthly.
