, 90, of Hopewell, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2009. She is preceded in death by her parents, Elizabeth and Christopher Costello; sisters, May Coffey, Phyllis Byrne, Betty Pauley, Bridget Costello, Anne Walsh; brothers, Billy Costello, Mickey Costello; and grandson, Jason Phillip Daniel. Mrs. Daniel was a homemaker and a former employee of Allied Chemical. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church. Mrs. Daniel graduated from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, and was a member of TBPA, TOPS, swimming groups at the Hopewell Community Center and she was an avid knitter. She is survived by her husband, Walter G. King's Fork High School senior Ian Copeland set a school record in the discus recently at the Captain's Classic Invitational at Christopher Newport University. Beyond the record, it was a big step for Copeland, as it marked the first time he has won the discus in a big meet.

Two more local schools announced the winners of the Presidential Education Awards for outstanding Academic Excellence and Education Achievement. The award for academic excellence is awarded to students in the fifth and eighth grade with a grade point average from 3.5 to 4.0 during the past two years who also scored at least 85 percent on standardized math and reading tests and who received two teacher recommendations. The award for academic achievement recognizes students who have shown outstanding educational growth, improvement, commitment or intellectual development.

NORMAL - University High School star Tyler McNeely was among three recruits to sign national letters of intent recently with the Illinois State baseball team. McNeely, right-handed pitcher Jake Wielebnicki of Hinsdale South and left-handed hurler Tyler Cox of Parkland College have joined six recruits announced previously. They were pitcher Christopher Newsome of Pontiac, Ryan Copeland of Elk Grove, Jim Jacquot of Belleville East, Anthony Ruffolo of Wheaton Warrenville South, Josh Schultz of Mount Zion and Dan Weston of LaGrange Lyons.
