Anyone who doubts the ignorance level in America need only watch a few episodes of Jay Leno's "Jaywalking" to get some idea of just how uninformed many U.S. citizens are. OK, Leno no doubt finds (and edits out) some people who can correctly answer his street-quiz questions. Still, the fact that week after week he comes up with people who can't name, say, the vice president of the United States, or in what country one would find Vienna, is an indication of prevailing cluelessness. We can wince-laugh when Leno points it out, but that ignorance can have very serious repercussions, as we learned after 9/11.
Several reader comments on the issue about two Christian viewpoints. Among others, Kyle Owens comments on Norman Levit's book review of From Complexity to Life, and states that until science uncovers the precise recipe for the origin of the Universe and its laws, 90% of "eminent scientists" need add humble pie to their diet.
Watching the Republican debates was like watching a reality show in which the winner takes home the prize for "Best Panderer of 2011." The Republican Party, which once cradled the likes of Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower, has been hijacked by right-wing evangelical Christians. The right-wing evangelicals, who are now a major part of the tea party, are pushing an agenda of social matters, such as abortion and gay rights, to the forefront of politics. In addition, this group includes those who identify themselves as Christian Zionists. They believe, as Newt Gingrich has stated, that Palestinians are an invented people, and unless the West Bank is forever occupied by Israel, Jesus will be unable to return and save us.
One organization, the Palestine Center in Washington, DC, held a symposium, "Palestinians and the Jewish State: 60 Years of Exile and Dispossession." Presenters discussed the status of the Palestinian refugees and their prospects for return, the status of Christian Palestinians and Palestinian citizens in Israel. BETHLEHEM, West Bank - Encouraged by renewed peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, Christian pilgrims from around the world converged on Jesus' traditional birthplace Monday to celebrate Christmas - a palpable contrast to the sparse crowds of recent years. The diverse mix of people included festive American tourists, clergymen in brown flowing robes and Palestinian scouts wearing kilts and playing bagpipes.
There are serious issues within Fatah that need to be resolved. After two decades of power struggles and acrimony within the organization, [Fatah]'s Revolutionary Council has agreed to hold its sixth general conference Aug. 4 in Bethlehem in the West Bank. Fatah, founded in 1 964, is affiliated with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Palestinian Authority (PA), which controls the West Bank. Fatah is fragmented along several lines. Bickering between the 'old guard' and the 'younger guard' remains one of several contentious points. The corruption within Fatah was one of the reasons behind Hamas's sweeping 2006 victory. Many Fatah supporters, including a number of Christian Palestinians, voted for Hamas not because they supported its ideology but in protest against the PLO's endemic nepo...

Palestinians under occupation don't have the right to go to work or school," speaker Anna Baltzer told the authence. "Israelis have road blocks that prevent them from being able to reach their work places or schools in a timely manner. Children have to wake up at 3 a.m. to reach their schools by 7 a.m. Everything is a struggle for the Palestinians. "We are a Christian organization inspired by the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, Working with Jews and Muslims to achieve peace and resist in a nonviolent way," [Nairn Ateek] said. "We have grown into an international organization where we have Friends of Sabeel all over the world in the US, UK, Canada, Scandinavia, Holland, Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany and Ireland." Israel is attempting to replace the Palestinian national understanding of Jerusalem as religious and Muslim to break down the allegiance between Muslim and Christian Palestinians and remove Palestinian political claims to the city. The Palestinians' patriotic view of Jerusalem stems from their historical control of the city and is supported by both Muslims and Christians. The territorial argument is complicated by past and existing practices of manipulating the city limits.
WASHINGTON, May 7 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Fifty leaders of evangelical and mainline Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox churches and church- related organizations in the U.S. today delivered a letter to President Bush asking for a full understanding of "the crisis in the Holy Land confronting Christian Palestinians, Christian institutions, and those who wish to visit the birthplace of Christianity. Stating that the "churches have directed their concerns to the Israeli government but to little avail," the church leaders appealed for the President's intervention to help restore the normal functioning of Christian institutions in Israel and the Occupied Territories and claimed that "it is generally acknowledged that relations of the churches and these institutions with the Israeli government ma...
