Joe Torchia seemed destined for the NFL before he even set foot on a college campus.
One of the country's top tight end prospects coming out of high school, Torchia chose to attend Virginia, a school known for cultivating NFL talent at that position. Referred to by some as "Tight End-U," Virginia had groomed the likes of Heath Miller, John Phillips, Tom Santi and Jon Stupar. Torchia was supposed to be the next in line.

The escalating warfare brought sharp words from President Bush, who pressed Moscow to accept an immediate cease-fire and pull its troops out to avert a "dramatic and brutal escalation" of violence in the former Soviet republic.

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia - After the devastation wreaked by the seas, a deluge from the skies deepened the misery for tsunami- stricken areas Saturday, triggering flash floods in Sri Lanka that sent evacuees fleeing and increasing the threat of deadly disease. U.S. forces began one of their biggest relief missions ever with the death toll likely to hit 150,000.
A magnitude-6.5 aftershock jolted Sumatra as the world's aid efforts shifted into high gear in ways big and small: elephant convoys working in Thailand, global assistance reaching $2 billion with a fresh pledge from Tokyo, and aid-bearing American helicopters touching down in Indonesia to the joy of tsunami survivors.
