Las nominaciones para The Squid and the Whale inclu...

  • As more characters are introduced - namely [Mike Norton]'s bored wife Lou Ann (January [Tommy Lee Jones]) and local waitress Rachel (Melissa Leo), who is sleeping with both the sheriff and [Pete] - the flashbacks fill us in on Pete's relationship with [Mel]. Bonding over horses, they end up whoring together - with Rachel and Lou Ann. Then Mel is killed (this is where I got confused because I thought Mel and the dead man were two different Mexicans) and Pete, none too stable anyway, finds out that Mike is the culprit, kidnaps him, digs up Mel's body and crosses to Mexico to give his friend a proper burial. Naturally nothing turns out the way Pete plans, but [Arriaga]'s finale is so poetic - without being sentimental - that one welcomes all the tsuris that precedes it. I'm always accus...

  • Some reviews can be as much fun as the book itself. Such is the case with Josh Schrank's review of local author Michael Haskins' new mystery, "Chasin' the Wind," recently posted in the "Nobody Move, This Is a Review" section of the "Crime Always Pays" Web site: In "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," Prof. Jones knocks over a student in the library with a motorcycle, telling the fellow, "To study archaeology, you must get out of the library!" But in the 1989 movie, "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," he tells his students, "Seventy percent of all archaeology is done in the library. All this was predicted back in 1834 by Honoré de Balzac in his novel "Le Père Goriot:" "The recent invention of the Diorama, carrying optical illusion a stage farther than the Panoramas, h...

  • There's a potentially affecting story about gender politics and community buried somewhere beneath all the melodramatic histrionics of North Country. New Zealander Niki Caro's first American film is, like her acclaimed Whale Rider, another story of a tough-minded female trying to shrug off sexism and carve out her path in a man's, man's, man's world, baby. One might assume that'd be enough for a movie--but not, this one. Charlize Theron stars as Josey Aimes, a young mother of two who heads back to her northern Minnesota hometown after catching a savage beating from her husband. Known as "the town tramp" ever since she got knocked up at 16, Josey isn't exactly welcomed back with open arms. Her father (the outstanding actor Richard Jenkins) doesn't much like having her around, while Josey...
