Before the Torah procession begins, the worshipers recite an additional prayer in Hebrew: "Yeshua hu ha-Mashiach hu adon hakol," meaning "Jesus, he is the Messiah, and he is Lord over all. Sha'arei Shalom, which was founded by Chosen People Ministries and meets in a Southern Baptist church, is part of the burgeoning phenomenon: Messianic "synagogues" that blend Jewish liturgy with a Christian message. They encourage Jewish-born members to maintain their identities and participate in events sponsored by the larger Jewish community. They call Jesus by the Hebrew name "Yeshua," and the New Testament "B'rit Chadashah." They welcome interfaith couples.

The Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors raised $6,100 for charity at its Dec. 11 holiday social. The money will go to CityTeam Ministries, which provides food, shelter and clothing for poor and homeless people. CityTeam, chosen as the charity of the year by the ABC chapter president, serves six cities in the United States, including Portland.

The Hatton Point resident won his class and took seventh place overall in his first bodybuilding competition. He plans to compete in the Mr. World Show in New York City in late October.
