The 200,000-member Choctaw Nation is financially strong and doing better now than it ever has, its leaders said over the weekend. Speaking at a tribal meeting at the Cox Center, Choctaw Nation Assistant Chief Gary Batton said the 200,000-member tribe has grown tremendously.
The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma believes that responsibility for achieving self-sufficiency rests with the governing body of the Tribe. It is the Tribal council's responsibility to assist the community in its ability to implement an economic development strategy and to plan, organize, and direct Tribal resources in a comprehensive manner which results in self-sufficiency. The Tribal Council recognizes the need to strengthen the Nation's economy, with primary efforts being focused on the creation of additional job opportunities through promotion and development.
An Arkansas couple will be allowed to sue the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma in a state district court, the Oklahoma Court of Civil Appeals ruled. The tribe consented to the jurisdiction of Oklahoma state courts when it entered into the 2004 Oklahoma Model Gaming Compact, the court found. Danny and Pat Dye alleged that Danny Dye was injured when a shuttle cart driven by an employee of the Choctaw Casino hit Dye as he walked to his car in the casino's parking lot. The Dyes complied with the tribe's tort claim procedures, but the tribe denied the claim.
The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma plans to complete expansion of the Choctaw Casino Resort Durant in February. The Choctaw Nation has partnered with Flintco Constructive Solutions and WorthGroup Architects for the expansion.
