When the Choctaw Nation acquired the old Oklahoma Presbyterian College here in the 1970s for $1 from city leaders, the tribe had only a few dozen employees.
Since then, the tribe's administrative offices and services have expanded to house about 400 employees and the old school complex is bursting at the seams, said Judy Allen, a Choctaw Nation spokeswoman.

The Choctaw people always elected their Chiefs but upon statehood in 1907 things changed, the Choctaw no longer elected their own leaders but were appointed by the President of The United States and then in he 1970's tribal self governance was encouraged which made it possible for tribes in Oklahoma to actually bring back their governments and elect their own leaders again. They already had a constitution, so they had a vote on the constitution, changed it a little bit and as of 1983 have working constitution, and today they elect according to a democracy.
