Your editorial "Countering China" (Monday) shows a mature understanding of geopolitics and the implications of China's rise for free democratic societies in general and the United States, Japan and India in particular. In coming years, China's economic power could translate into military might. I fully agree with the editorial that America's ability to contain China could depend on the rise of other global counterweights allied with the United States, particularly Japan, India and Australia in the Asia-Pacific region, i.e., the "core" group formed by the United States to lead post-tsunami relief efforts. You are again right in stating that India, the largest democracy with a billion-plus people, is another critical potential counterweight to China. Although China's growth has outpaced t...

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Pakistan said China will help build two more nuclear power plants in the energy-starved Muslim nation, tightening its bonds with Beijing as rising militant violence strains its anti-terror alliance with the United States. The nuclear agreement was among a dozen economic cooperation accords signed during President Asif Ali Zardari's recent visit to Beijing, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said Saturday.
This rule amends the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) by adding fourteen persons under twenty-one entries to the Entity List. The persons who are added to the Entity List have been determined by the U.S. Government to be acting contrary to the national security or foreign policy interests of the United States. These persons will be listed on the Entity List under the following four destinations: Afghanistan, China, Hong Kong, and Pakistan. In addition, this rule amends the EAR to implement modifications to the Entity List on the basis of the annual review of the Entity List conducted by the End-User Review Committee (ERC), which the ERC conducts to determine if any entries on the Entity List should be removed or modified. This rule implements the results of the annual review for ...

It began as a brilliant exercise in thought and deed -- and this weekend, the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market makes its seventh appearance: Museum Hill will be the scene of yet another open-air event bringing bits of the best of the world's wondrous bazaars. The creators and merchants gathered here are, in fact, the best of the best: 170 artists from 51 countries -- chosen carefully from 400 applicants. To name a few of their home countries -- Kenya, Ukraine, Bhutan, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia, Haiti, Mongolia and Peru -- doesn't begin to tell of global numbers represented here this year; throw in China, Pakistan, India and Mexico for a notion of the massive populations of whom market visitors will get a hint.
