[Gregory J. Reed, Esq], President/CEO of Keeper of the Word Foundation has just returned from South Africa where, along with leadership from the Michigan State University Museum, he met with the executive staff of the Nelson Mandela Museum in Mthatha, Southern Cape Province to plan an international exhibit featuring children's letters to human rights leaders Rosa Parks and Nelson Mandela. "This is an opportunity for global education, now that MSU Museum, under the leadership of Kurt Dewhurst and Marsha MacDowell, have stepped up to align Mrs. Parks letters from the book, Dear Mrs. Parks: A Dialogue With Today's Youth with Mr. Mandela's legacy and the Nelson Mandela National Museum in South Africa, as part of an American Association of Museums' international grant program, making MSU's m...

The role of progressive leaders is to push the envelope, not take us back in time. [Nelson Mandela], despite having similar traditional roots to [Jacob Zuma], struck a goal for gender equality when he married former Mozambican first lady Graca Machel who kept her surname and identity, and negotiated a commuter marriage between two countries. With Zuma, who has tried to step into Mandela's shoes, it has become the fashion to flaunt women and children in a way that says "My conquests, my wealth, and my possessions.
What is frightening about the effect of Zuma on gender discourse in South Africa is that because the most powerful man in the land is involved, the ANC Women's League (also the driving force behind the Progressive Women's Movement) has lost its voice, joining in the cacophony ...

Among other things, some of these patrons were called "nigger." The wife of the head of the Soweto "Street Beat" Dancers was told "go back to Africa." While leading Blacks are seeking to protect the rights of illegal immigrants, our brothers and sisters from Africa are being subjected to white terrorism. A plea for help from the NAACP fell on deaf ears.
Twenty years ago, five women, led by Mrs. Rosalie Pazant, initiated "The Gullah Festival," which would expand the former celebration of "Declaration Day." Mrs. Pazant is the family's matriarch. The founders were mostly members of the Pazant family. Three of the founders are still involved in it today.

His father died when Luthuli was 10 years old, and he and his mother returned to their ancestral home in Groutville, South Africa. There he learned the traditions and duties of the Zulu tribe and stayed with his uncle, Martin Luthuli, the elected chief of the Zulus in the Umzinyathi District. At that time, the country was in the throes of 'de facto' apartheid but Luthuli's mother eked out a living as a washerwoman and combined her earnings with a scholarship to send young Luthuli to a school in Edendale, near Pietermaritzburg, then to the American Mission's teacher-training college near Durban. After completing his teaching courses, he became one of the college's first three African instructors.
The incident was the catalyst for the formation of armed resistance by the ANC and the Pan A...

Ms. [Lisa Jackson] said of the day's events: The children's interests were sparked from the moment we entered the Dwyer Cultural Center. The vibrant colors and audio visuals immediately tell you, this is going to be good! With the well-planned combination of the film, Harlem Is,' the quilted 'Reflections of a Community" exhibit, [Daniel Carlton]'s animated talk and the walking tour, the children were exposed to an engaging, bird's-eye view of the history and magic of Harlem. The outing was appropriately enhanced with a visit to the Schomburg, where the current St. Philip's Episcopal Church exhibit was on view. As I explained the role of the Black church to the Civil Rights Movement in America, Mrs. Mogolola, the interpreter, shared that the Black church in South Africa held the same imp...
