Sunday's rain sent the party inside, where handcrafted jewelry, homemade stationery and other vendors were available. Thirty-One, makers of monogrammed bags and backpacks, was a big hit for college- bound shoppers. One of the biggest highlights was the 50/50 raffle, where a winner splits proceeds with the church. • Our children need to be in the midst of elders. They need them everyday in their lives to realize not only because of their age; that they are elders because of their experience, that they have wisdom, that they have guidance. And we would like for our children to respect that. In all indigenous societies the elder population holds a position of high esteem in that society. It's only in this society, in this day and time that elders are shut away-not touched- not thought of. They do things they haven't done all year long. "The elders in African tradition as well as in life in general are like our resources, sort of like ...

INFLUENCES ON THE CONTEMPORARY MOVEMENT FOR MIDWIVES The continued emphasis on the narrative accounts of African American midwives within the history of not only midwifery in the United States but also African American culture and life opens up possibilities for important discussions of race and the effects of a legacy of racism that still affects contemporary midwives in thei...
