News Advisory:
On Wednesday, July 13 at 10 a.m., the Children's Defense Fund -- New York (CDF-NY), in conjunction with Council Member Gale A. Brewer, will conduct a Press Conference on the steps of City Hall in support of pending Resolution 1034 (copy below). The Resolution, introduced by Council Members Brewer and Lewis Fidler on June 23, 2005, calls upon the City Council to condemn the proposed federal budget passed by Congress on April 28, 2005 for failing to protect the vital interests of New York's children and their families. As part of the conference, more than 100 young people from the CDF Freedom Schools(sm) summer program will conduct a Harambee (see NOTE) celebration in front of City Hall.

Is she afraid that a hearing and a quite possible majority vote would so antagonize the hallowed Education Mayor-despite her ultra-loyal support for his third term-that her reciprocal chance to succeed him would be jeopardized? A School Safety Coalition supporting this law, which would return the school system to civilian control, includes the Children's Defense Fund-New York; NAACP-Legal Defense and Education Fund; New York Lawyers for the Public Interest; the Correctional Association of New York; the Association of Legal Aid Attorneys; and others. In the Daily News on October 9, his spokesman, Deputy Commissioner Paul Brown-who is clearly qualified to teach a course in Orwellian doublespeak for White House press secretariesdeclared that although students can't be criminally prosecute...

WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Children's Defense Fund Action Council today called on Members of Congress to support children and defeat the 2006 budget bill when it is voted on in the U.S. House of Representatives on February 1st.
Congress failed children miserably in 2005. But Members of Congress will have a final chance to do the right thing and vote for children when this morally obscene budget bill is brought before them again for a vote next week. Last year, Congress chose to protect the wealthiest among us at the expense of the most vulnerable among us: our children," said Children's Defense Fund (CDF) Action Council President Marian Wright Edelman.

Usually we want for a report to come down and then mount a battle to save hospitals, but this time we're getting a head start," [Judy Wessler] said. "We're starting to mobilize, we're doing outreach, community organizing, a political analysis, and we've drafted legislation. We're reaching out to stat...

NEW YORK, July 7 /U.S. Newswire/ -- On Tuesday, July 5th, students participating in the Children's Defense Fund - New York (CDF-NY) Freedom School on Manhattan's Lower East Side were denied meals they are entitled to through the Summer Meals Program. CDF- NY, in its recent report, "Summer Meals for Children 2004: A Failing Grade for New York City," highlighted the ineffectiveness and waste that characterized the implementation of the Summer Meals Program in New York City last summer and called for needed reforms. Now CDF-NY students have experienced these problems first hand. The Summer Meals Program is funded entirely though federal dollars at no cost to the city and was established to ensure that children and teenagers under 19 receive free, nutritious meals throughout the summer mon...

More than a million American students drop out of high school each year, with graduation rates in some of our largest cities at less than 40 percent. Instead of being on their way to lives of productive adulthood, too many of our young people, before they even start school, have already been snagged by what Marian Wright Edelman of the Children's Defense Fund calls America's "cradle to prison pipeline." That insidious pipehne is fueled by a combination of poverty, single-parent families, disparities in health care, underperforming schools, unequal treatment by the criminal justice system, misguided values and the lack of highquality early childhood learning opportunities.

NEW YORK, June 13 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Children's Defense Fund (CDF) releases its report on gun violence against children, "Protect Children, Not Guns," at a time when major U.S. cities are calling for strategies to combat illegal firearms. Citing the most recent data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the report reveals that 2,827 children and teens died as a result of gun violence in 2003 -- more than the number of American fighting men and women killed in hostile action in Iraq from 2003 to April 2006.
Just as gruesome as incoming casualties from a battlefield, the bodies of young gunshot victims stream into urban hospital trauma centers on the frontlines of an undeclared war on America's children," said Marian Wright Edelman, president of the Children's Def...
