As part of her 17 state, 8,500 mile, cross-country tour on a customized purple schoolbus, mother and healthcare advocate Kathie McClure visited Children's Bureau's Magnolia Place Family Center in Los Angeles to share her story with local mothers and advocates. On the Friday before Mother's Day, McClure was joined by speakers from Health Care for America Now coalition members, Health Access California and The Children's Defense Fund, as well as a local mother who shared her healthcare story. A crowd of advocates, mothers, and children listened as McClure told of her travels throughout the country.
The Children's Defense FundCA is proud to honor mothers and their children this Mother's Day by standing with them and our HCAN partners to call for real healthcare reform that will give these...

WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Children's Defense Fund Action Council today called on Members of Congress to support children and defeat the 2006 budget bill when it is voted on in the U.S. House of Representatives on February 1st.
Congress failed children miserably in 2005. But Members of Congress will have a final chance to do the right thing and vote for children when this morally obscene budget bill is brought before them again for a vote next week. Last year, Congress chose to protect the wealthiest among us at the expense of the most vulnerable among us: our children," said Children's Defense Fund (CDF) Action Council President Marian Wright Edelman.

Whether they like it or not, school districts have become the first line of defense against the spread of communicable diseases among children. It's a burden for cash-strapped schools to carry, and another reason why the state should adequately fund school nurses and pay for the other costs of handling vaccine programs.
The latest disease outbreak to hit California reads like a page torn from a 1950s calendar - it's whooping cough, or pertussis. What was wiped out back in the days of poodle skirts and car hops is back with a vengeance. Last year, California reported 9,000 cases of whooping cough, the worst epidemic in 60 years.

The Children's Defense Fund works nationally to stop "lock 'em up" legislation that favors punitive measures for children and youths over preventive investments. This year our fight is not limited to federal legislation. In the coming weeks we also will focus on defeating Proposition 6-a horrendous California ballot initiative that would criminalize youths through massive revisions to the state's juvenile justice codes.
Under the pretense of creating "safer neighborhoods," Proposition 6 changes current law to require that more children, as young as 14 years old, are tried and sentenced as adults. This despite the fact that a federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report found that youths sentenced to adult prison commit more crimes and more serious crimes after release compa...
