I'm in my mid-20s, and I come from a divorced family. As I've gotten older, I've found that committing to and maintaining relationships has become more and more difficult. I always find myself questioning whether someone is "the one" and end up pushing them away. I've heard that children of divorced parents are more likely to have relationship issues or end up divorced themselves. Do you think this is true?

Every summer I get questions regarding summer visitation of children between divorced or separated parents. Grandparents as well as parents want to know why different families have different visitation arrangements.
In Family A the noncustodial parent gets five continuous weeks of summer visitation. But in Family B it is a two-week on two-week off schedule. In family C it is every other week. Why the differences?

Earlier this past week, I watched the film, "Four Christmases," which stars Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon. I assumed the film was going to be a comedy about the holiday season and the difficult, but often comic, nature of familial interaction during the holidays. What I did not expect was for the film to take a serious turn to examine the nature of relationships and how our family experiences can cast a shadow over subsequent romantic relationships.
In the film, Vaughn and Witherspoon are romantically involved but have no plans or desire to become married. Instead of spending time with family over the holidays, they plan an exotic vacation every year and tell their families some elaborate st...

Madison Children of divorced parents could get a high-tech boost allowing them contact with Mom or Dad over the Internet, although some fear that virtual visitation could actually reduce the amount of face-to-face time those parents spend with their children.
A Wisconsin measure signed into law by Gov. Jim Doyle last week says that if a court grants physical custody to both parents, electronic communications such as instant messaging or video conferencing with one parent also might be granted during the other parent's time with the child.

ATLANTA - Changes to state laws governing the custody of children of divorced parents could be coming next year, depending on the decisions of a legislative study committee looking at the issue.
The House Study Committee on Shared Parenting, which began meeting in September, could propose new legislation by the end of the year encouraging judges to grant joint custody in most divorce cases. But some judges who deal with family law cases don't want to see their hands tied by too many restrictions.

[Jerome Diamond] was asked about the problems of children of divorced or separated parents. He said the JFCS did not develop "any muscle" in dealing with that problem until 1976 but that "now the kids get a better deal than their parents.
In previous years, he told the seminar, the real estate boom of the late '60s and early '70s had provided "the wherewithal for separating" by couples "through division of property" resulting in a serious increase in the number of breakups of Jewish families during those years.

Protecting children from abduction and securing the financial condition of children whose parents are divorced are the intent of two laws that take effect today.
Several child support collection amendments are included in HB18. In particular, state law will now allow a court to approve a method of child support payments other than income withholding. The amendments also allows the state agency in charge of collecting delinquent payments -- the Office of Recovery Services -- to enter into special agreements with payers for electronic payment of child support.
