Editorial The Dept of Labor and Dept of Justice have strongly objected to a bill proposed in Congress, exempting Amish youth from child labor laws. They claim the the proposed bill violates the First Amendment and will complicate the enforcement of child labor laws.
OLYMPIA -- Gov. Christine Gregoire is expected to sign a bill designed to strengthen child neglect laws. The Justice and Raiden Act, named after two boys who starved to death in November while their mother lay in a drunken stupor, passed the Senate unanimously on Saturday.
An omnibus bill working its way through the General Assembly could introduce a wide range of changes for the state's justice system.
