DAYTON -- In an effort to get ahead of the 2012-'13 state budget, a group of evangelical ministers are calling on state legislators to avoid cutting a program that provides nurses for home visits to young, expectant mothers.
The ministers said at a Tuesday news conference that research shows the Nurse-Family Partnership has cut child abuse and neglect, made mothers less dependent on welfare, gotten fathers more involved in their families and saved the taxpayers money.

It costs at least $94 billion every year to ease the physical and emotional damage inflicted by rampant child abuse in the U.S., according to a new study presented Jan. 25 to New Mexico officials in Santa Fe.
As a nation, we're paying $258 million every day to deal with the problems caused by child abuse and neglect," said study author Suzette Fromm Reed. "That amounts to about $1,462 per year for every family in the U.S. We're all paying for it, and that makes it everybody's business, whether you have children or not.
