ANAHEIM - The Vernon Wells-free Angels lineup was designed by manager Mike Scioscia to maximize the club's offensive potential, and for one night anyway mission accomplished. With Howie Kendrick playing in left field for the injured Wells, the Angels knocked around White Sox pitching for 12 hits, spread out among seven players, in a 6-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox Tuesday in front of 40,128 at Angel Stadium.
You know, there was great players, but nobody off the chart, if you know what I mean, which means you competed as a team. Jermaine Dye had an interesting quote that I think is worth sharing with people who are paying attention at this moment. He said, "From the start of spring training, everybody was hungry." He didn't say one player was hungry or a guy going into arbitration was hungry or a free agent for next year was hungry. He said everybody was hungry.
Picking up right where they left off in 2008, tile White Sox were proud to bring die second annual "Double Duty Classic" back to die Soutii side in July. The "Double Duty Classic" is not merely a game, but is now a fast-growing, highly anticipated baseball event, honoring die traditions and enduring legacy of die historic Negro Leagues, while also promoting the next generation of inner-city baseball stars. The Chicago White Sox's own brand of South Side pride was on display in vintage black and white recently, as they once again made an appearance in this year's Bud Billiken Day Parade and Picnic, helping to send Chicago-area youth back to school with a living sports and civil rights history lesson. ANAHEIM - Through his horrific slump for the first month-plus of the season, Vernon Wells at least has played solid defense and could be counted on to play virtually every day. Check that.
Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said after his team's victory in Game 2 of the American League Championship Series he'd rather be lucky than good. Turns out, his White Sox are lucky AND good. The White Sox got great pitching, timely hitting and all the breaks throughout their series against the Angels, including their 6- 3 victory Sunday night in Game 5 that closed out the series four games to one.
CHICAGO John Danks held the Angels hitless for six innings before finishing with a two-hitter Thursday, and the surging Chicago White Sox beat Los Angeles 1-0 for a four-game sweep and their 22nd victory in 27 games.
ANAHEIM - The past two months, an Angels pitcher has been as good as any pitcher in the American League, a pitcher who, at 28, is reaching a level that has the organization and Angels fans everywhere excited. And no, we're not talking about Jered Weaver.
WHAT WE KNOW The bullpen will be effective. With four players who have closing experience-RHPs Billy Koch, Shingo Takatsu and Cliff Politte and LHP Damaso Marte-the starters can feel comfortable exiting after even five solid innings. The club will hit for power again after setting a team record with 220 home runs last season. IB Paul Konerko is expected to bounce back from a below-par 2003, and 3B Joe Crede has a full season behind him.
CHICAGO Jim Thome hit his 579th homer, Joe Mauer had three more hits and the Minnesota Twins took sole possession of the AL Central lead by beating the Chicago White Sox 12-6 on Tuesday night.
