  • CHICAGO - John Schneider's work is all shouts and hand gestures. Get him on the phone and you'll strain to hear over the barks and cries of his fellow commodities traders in the corn pit at the Chicago Board of Trade. The board's art deco building has long been an icon, and Schneider compared it at its founding in 1848 to a business like Groupon Inc. today - operating on the economic frontier and pushing Chicago toward its future. Even as the shouts and gestures gave way to the bits and bytes of modern electronic trading, the Board of Trade and the city's other exchanges had a strong hand in making Chicago the financial center it's become.

  • CHICAGO (HedgeWorld.com) - OptionsHouse Inc. is gearing up its portfolio margining capabilities, which it will leverage this summer as the stock and options brokerage makes a push to establish a hedge fund client base. OptionsHouse, which launched its online trading site in January, is a subsidiary of the market-making and proprietary trading firm Peak6 Capital Management LLC. The two firms share a headquarters in the Chicago Board of Trade building, on the site of the CBOT's original trading floor. According to John Hass, co-chief executive of OptionsHouse, the firm was created to take Peak6's options- trading technology and infrastructure and bring it to sophisticated retail clients and institutional clients.

  • On the demand side, Ken Chong says interest from the United States is growing, and Alaron Managing Directory Scott Slutsky points out that a slew of new China-oriented stock indexes are lending credibility and commoditization to the mainland Chinese markets. On the supply side, virtually every Asian exchange has been or is being revamped, modernized, and groomed to meet this demand. China has allowed some of its massive state-influenced companies to list shares abroad. But mainland China's risk management is largely being carried out through proxy with home-grown commodity markets tethered to the rest of the world only via tightly controlled arbitrage. One sign of China's growing integration is the willingness of its exchanges to sign Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with a growing n...

  • With financial institutions throughout the US making headlines during today's economic crisis, the larger-than-life image of banks has begun to shift. However, in the center of Chicago's financial district, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago building maintains its rich history and esteemed stature while facing today's economic realities and modern building needs. Designed by famed Chicago architectural firm Graham, Anderson, Probst and White and built in 1922, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago was described from the start as an "architectural marvel." The most dramatic change during its renovation was within the main lobby. The bank removed the staircase that was the focal point of the original building to open up a four-story space in the lobby. The building's history and the bank's...

  • CHICAGO (HedgeWorld.com) - The words "Chicago Board of Trade" were still carved into the limestone faade of the exchange's headquarters Wednesday morning, as they have been for the better part of the past century. Those words - and John Storrs' 30-foot-tall, aluminum-clad statue of a faceless Ceres, the Roman goddess of grain - have kept watch over Chicago's financial district, at the southern end of LaSalle Street, since 1930, when the CBOT moved into its shiny new Art Deco tower. At the time, the CBOT inhabited Chicago's tallest building, and at 635 feet with the statue included it remains the world's tallest Art Deco building outside New York. In a city saddled with the nickname "the Second City," such titles hold real meaning. Biggest, tallest, busiest.
