RICHMOND - Governor Bob McDonnell recently appointed Javaid Siddiqi as deputy secretary for education.
Before joining the McDonnell administration, Javaid Siddiqi spent 12 years with Chesterfield County Public Schools. During his time in Chesterfield, Siddiqi served as a high school teacher, middle school assistant principal, and high school assistant principal. Most recently, he served as the principal of Robious Middle School where he led the implementation of Expeditionary Learning, a nationally recognized school reform model.

CHESTERFIELD - As a child, Leslie Alderman always hated riding on the school bus. But as an adult, out of economical necessity, she discovered her passion for the bulky yellow vehicles and made this passion her job.
Last month, the Chester resident was awarded a special honor - she is Virginia's best school bus driver. As a result, Alderman will be behind the wheel representing Virginia and Chesterfield County Public Schools during a national bus driver competition this weekend in Baltimore.

FORT LEE - The best businesses start at home and the best business professionals concentrate their efforts on home. On Thursday night at the 62nd annual Colonial Heights Chamber of Commerce Dinner, that was the message of guest speaker Dr. William C. Bosher Jr., a distinguished professor at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Bosher's career includes serving as state superintendent for education, superintendent for Chesterfield County Public Schools and Henrico County Public Schools as well as classroom experience and building-level administrator positions.

CHESTERFIELD -- Chesterfield County Public Schools annually honors two students from every school for demonstrating citizenship and the school division's core values of respect, responsibility, honesty and accountability. During an April 15 banquet at the Holiday Inn Select Koger South, 128 students from Chesterfield's 64 schools were recognized as Students of the Year for 2010.
This year, we are celebrating the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the school system's core values," Superintendent Marcus Newsome said, "so this is a historic celebration.

Chesterfield Superintendent Dr. Marcus J. Newsome has been unanimously chosen as 2010 Region 1 Superintendent of the Year. Dr. Newsome joins Chesterfield County Public Schools' two most recent superintendents - Dr. Bill Bosher and Dr. Billy Cannaday - in earning this regional recognition.

CHESTERFIELD - Girls who will enter seventh or eighth grade in Chesterfield County Public Schools this fall may apply to attend Girls in Engineering, Mathematics and Science. GEMS is a free summer camp offering hands-on experience in science, technology, engineering and math.
Participants will work together to build a robot while learning about mechanics and computer programming. GEMS participants will also meet professional women working in engineering and related fields.
