  • WASHINGTON -- It's that time of year again, when a swath of the nation's capital becomes awash in a sea of pink. The National Cherry Blossom Festival kicks off March 28 and runs through April 12, with more than a million visitors expected to stroll through the 3,700 cherry trees that circle Washington's Tidal Basin and participate in a slew of festival events.

Before the two-week National Cherry Blossom Festival opens Saturday, organizers held a fundraising walk and vigil Thursday evening among the trees for victims of Japan's March 11 earthquake and tsunami. An estimated 18,000 people have been killed in the disaster.

  • Listen up, Cherry Blossom lovers. There is a new registration process that begins this week for the venerable 10-mile run, which begins and ends in the District. According to the race's Web site, "After the 2009 Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile run filled its on-line quota of 12,000 runners last year in just 2 hours and 45 minutes, the organizers have decided to institute a lottery system for entry into the 2010 event. Under the new system, entrants will be able to register for the lottery over a 10-day period between 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 and 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, December 10, 2009.

  • Due to the March 11 earthquake in the Japan, the East San Gabriel Valley Japanese Community Center and city of West Covina have decided to focus Saturday's Cherry Blossom Festival on relief efforts to West Covina's Sister City, Ohtawara, Japan. As a result of the earthquake, many residents of Ohtawara, located in Tochigi Prefecture, have lost their homes and are without electricity. Several city facilities, including City Hall, were closed due to earthquake damage. Ten evacuation centers were opened throughout the city to provide temporary shelter to earthquake victims.

  • See Washington, D.C., in bloom as our nation's capital welcomes spring with the 74th annual National Cherry Blossom Festival March 28 to April 12. The citywide festival, which commemorates the 97th anniversary of the 3,000-tree gift from Tokyo, consists of a variety of events -- from art exhibits and staged performances to sporting events.
