Low levels of a hazardous chemical used in dry cleaning and degreasing have been detected in a Salt Lake City culinary water well, but officials stress there is no danger. Perchloroethylene, often called PCE, was found in a city well used to supply drinking water, located at 1500 East and 500 South. But the levels are not dangerous, and no trace of the chemical has been detected in the reservoir near Eccles Stadium where water from the well is pumped.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA or the Agency) is taking final action to revise the manner for applying the threshold planning quantities (TPQs) for those extremely hazardous substances (EHSs) that are non-reactive solid chemicals in solution. This revision allows facilities subject to the Emergency Planning requirements that have a non-reactive solid EHS in solution, to first multiply the amount of the solid chemical in solution on-site by 0.2 before determining if this quantity equals or exceeds the lower published TPQ. WASHINGTON -- The Environmental Protection Agency wants to regulate a toxic chemical used in rocket fuel that has contaminated drinking water supplies, reversing a decision made under the Bush administration. A government official briefed by the EPA told The Associated Press on Thursday night that the agency has proposed that the chemical, perchlorate, be regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act. The official, who did not want to be named because a final decision has not been made, said the plan is now under interagency review.

The oil and gas industry says they are regulated enough and we can go on issuing new Marcellus Shale drilling permits without new laws or additional staff. About 30 workers were evacuated from a Salt Lake chemical plant on Monday after an explosion damaged a building and water main. No one was injured in the explosion in the building at Thatcher Chemical Company, near 1900 West and 1300 South. An employee was exposed to the liquid chemical, sodium thiocarbonate, and was decontaminated at the scene for precautionary purposes, Salt Lake fire spokesman Scott Freitag said.
