SPRINGFIELD, Ill., May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The Illinois Coast Guard announced Monday a temporary closure on portions of the Little Calumet River south of the economically vital O'Brien Lock and Dam at the request of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This crucial commercial link between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River could be shut down from May 21st through the 27th in response to the threat of Asian Carp. Asian Carp, a group of four problematic invasive species, have moved into the Illinois River from the Mississippi and are currently being controlled through a variety of measures, including an electrified barrier halting their progress south of the locks. Although Asian Carp have not been found beyond the barriers, it's appear...

CHICAGO - The city was in a predicament. By the late 1800s, the slow-moving Chicago River had become a cesspool of sewage and factory pollution oozing into Lake Michigan, the source of drinking water for the bustling metropolis. The waterway had grown so putrid that it raised fears of a disease outbreak and concerns about hurting development. So in a first-of-its-kind feat, engineers reversed the river by digging a series of canals that not only carried the stinking mess away from the lake, but also created the only shipping route between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River.

The fish that could eat the Great Lakes is only six miles away from Lake Michigan now maybe. The big, ugly and unbelievably hungry Asian carp has been making its way up the Mississippi for two decades and now appears to be closer than ever to migrating en masse to the world's largest body of fresh water.

Massive fish kill yields no carp, proponents concede lock closure wrong step SPRINGFIELD, Ill., May 27 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Following a one week lock closure to accommodate a fish kill on a two mile stretch of the Little Calumet River in search of Asian carp, none of the invasive species was found. As a result, proponents of lock closure now acknowledge their call for lock closure was unwarranted. Nick Schroeck, director of the Great Lakes Environmental Law Center in Detroit admits, "Perhaps we can concede that asking for an injunction to close the locks was not the right solution." Area businesses and industry leaders wonder if additional economic disruption lies ahead.
