Sobriety checkpoints - like the one this past weekend - often fail to make even a single drunk-driving arrest despite stopping hundreds of vehicles ("Whittier police to conduct DUI checkpoint Friday and Saturday," March 24). A 2009 University of Maryland study found that checkpoints don't have "any impact on public perceptions, driver behaviors, or alcohol- related crashes, police citations for impaired driving, and public perceptions of alcohol- impaired driving risk.

When first we learned last year that local government was considering the installation of security checkpoints at public entrances to the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Civic Center administration building, we thought it was a good idea.
