Sobriety checkpoints - like the one this past weekend - often fail to make even a single drunk-driving arrest despite stopping hundreds of vehicles ("Whittier police to conduct DUI checkpoint Friday and Saturday," March 24). A 2009 University of Maryland study found that checkpoints don't have "any impact on public perceptions, driver behaviors, or alcohol- related crashes, police citations for impaired driving, and public perceptions of alcohol- impaired driving risk.
Every time I stand there, pulling change out of my pockets, taking off my shoes, removing my laptop, already worried about where I might have put my boarding pass and passport, I think: How stupid is this?
I read somewhere that 2010 will be the "year of checkpoints," where police on the pretext of reducing drunken driving, actually make fortunes towing away cars and
If local government is to establish security checkpoints in the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Civic Center Administration Building only to exempt more than 1,000 government employees, why bother? To allow them to pass into the main government building with only a photo ID card while everyone else is required to empty their pockets, what is the point?
SANAA, Yemen - Yemen's political upheaval has emboldened suspected al-Qaida militants who have seized a provincial capital and now are operating openly in the lawless south, training with live ammunition and controlling roads with checkpoints. The U.S. fears the power vacuum will give even freer rein to al- Qaida's branch in Yemen - already the terror network's most active franchise. Yemen's government said Thursday that troops killed 12 suspected al-Qaida militants as part of a campaign to retake the southern city of Zinjibar.
When first we learned last year that local government was considering the installation of security checkpoints at public entrances to the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Civic Center administration building, we thought it was a good idea. After all, as we have painfully learned, we have among us unbalanced people who will commit evil acts. Every time the nation's senses are shocked by one of these mindless acts, we ask ourselves what we could have done to prevent this loss of life.
The flashing lights and police officers of a sobriety checkpoint can strike fear in a driver's heart. And police say that's exactly the point of the checkpoints - even if few drunken drivers are actually caught.
Three local law enforcement agencies will administer sobriety checkpoints Friday. The Ontario Police Department will be conducting a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint on from 6 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday throughout the city.
QALQILIYA, West Bank -- Checkpoint 107, its walls painted in calming cream and light blue, is the flagship of Israel's new plan for defending itself while reducing hardship for ordinary Palestinians. It has everything from air-conditioned waiting halls to a blast-proof cell for suicide bombers. The doctrine says 11 such high-tech terminals -- to be built into Israel's separation barrier -- will streamline control of Palestinian access to Israel and make it possible to lift some of the life-disrupting checkpoints deeper in the West Bank.
