VANDALIA -- The late Bernard Innocent was a 6-foot-9 college basketball star at Charleston Southern University and Miami-Dade Junior College in Miami who was drafted in the first-round of the Continental Basketball Association by a Wisconsin team.
Innocent later played with a CBA team in Florida and played in France and Spain before encountering knee problems that resulted in an early retirement.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Rachelle Coward scored a game-high 30 points to power Charleston Southern University to a 78-63 women's basketball victory over Maine in the consolation game of the Gator Holiday Classic on Wednesday.
In a game marked by scoring runs by both teams, the Buccaneers (7- 4) eventually took a 20-point lead in the second half. The Black Bears (3-9) were able to cut the margin to 62-48 with 7:48 to play, but the teams traded points from then on.

AUSTIN, Texas - College football analyst Craig James, who starred as a tailback at Southern Methodist University and with the New England Patriots in the 1980s, left ESPN on Monday and entered the Republican race for the open U.S. Senate seat in Texas.
James, who appeared on the cable network's weekly game broadcasts, had been flirting with entering politics for more than year but has not held public office. He submitted his paperwork to the Republican Party of Texas Monday, the last day of the normal filing period.
