The hung jury came after four full days of deliberations in the trial of Charles McCoy Jr., charged with 12 shootings that terrified Columbus-area commuters over five months in 2003 and 2004.

  • COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A prosecution psychiatrist agreed Tuesday that the man behind a series of shootings along Columbus-area highways was severely mentally ill, but he testified the defendant tried to avoid detection and understood it was wrong when he fired his gun. Attorneys for Charles McCoy Jr. concede he was behind the 12 shootings in 2003 and 2004 in which one woman was killed. Under his plea of innocent by reason of insanity, they must prove that his illness kept him from understanding the shootings were wrong.

  • COLUMBUS, Ohio - The man on trial in a series of highway shootings heard mocking voices from the television for years, leading him to drop wood and bags of concrete off overpasses and then to buy a gun, his attorney told jurors Thursday. Charles McCoy Jr. "believed people could read his mind" and would use those thoughts to make fun of him, Mark Collins said as he opened the defense case.
