COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A judge declared a mistrial Sunday in the case of a man who admitted to a string of highway shootings - one of which killed a woman - but claimed innocence by reason of insanity. The hung jury came after four full days of deliberations in the trial of Charles McCoy Jr., charged with 12 shootings that terrified Columbus-area commuters over five months in 2003 and 2004.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A prosecution psychiatrist agreed Tuesday that the man behind a series of shootings along Columbus-area highways was severely mentally ill, but he testified the defendant tried to avoid detection and understood it was wrong when he fired his gun. Attorneys for Charles McCoy Jr. concede he was behind the 12 shootings in 2003 and 2004 in which one woman was killed. Under his plea of innocent by reason of insanity, they must prove that his illness kept him from understanding the shootings were wrong.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The man on trial in a series of highway shootings heard mocking voices from the television for years, leading him to drop wood and bags of concrete off overpasses and then to buy a gun, his attorney told jurors Thursday. Charles McCoy Jr. "believed people could read his mind" and would use those thoughts to make fun of him, Mark Collins said as he opened the defense case.
LOS ANGELES - The mood was somber at the Long Beach Superior Court Tuesday as more than 300 Los Angeles Superior Court employees were laid off due to an "unprecedented budget crisis," and dire warnings of more layoffs were issued. News of the cuts and warnings of future slashings came from Presiding Judge Charles "Tim" McCoy Jr., who oversees the Los Angeles Superior Court, the nation's largest trial court system.
