ORONO - Much was made in February of the anniversary of naturalist Charles Darwin's 200th birthday. The University of Maine, however, is focusing on another Darwin anniversary that also falls this year. UMaine will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the publication of Darwin's seminal book, "The Origin of Species," with a semester- long lecture course and a weeklong panel series in November, and a keynote lecture in October.

MORGANTOWN - West Virginia University has big plans for celebrating Charles Darwin's 200th birthday. Beginning in February and continuing through early April, the university will present a series of lectures, displays, skits and other events as part of DarwinFest.
PROVO -- Brigham Young University's biology department will celebrate "Charles Darwin Bicentennial Week" with a series of lectures this week. Today, BYU biologists Keith Crandall, Byron Adams and Jerry Johnson will present "How Darwin's Big Idea Has Improved the Human Condition: Three Vignettes for Discussion" at 6 p.m. in Room 455 of the Thomas L. Martin Building. They will discuss evolution in modern medicine, forensics and behavior.
BOISE, Idaho University of Idaho President Tim White has entered the debate pitting Charles Darwin's theories of life against religious-based alternatives by forbidding anything other than evolution from being taught in the Moscow school's life, earth and physical science classes. White's edict came as a U of I biologist, Scott Minnich, a supporter of the "intelligent design" theory, was set to testify in a Pennsylvania lawsuit brought by eight families trying to have this theory, branded as a new form of creationism, dropped from a school district's biology curriculum. Minnich was asked to testify on behalf of the district.
