marks both the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin and the 1 50th anniversary of his epochal Origin of Species. The famed Englishman's scientific works caused volcanic eruptions of doubt throughout the religious world. In his personal life, writes Jewish Star Editor Douglas Wertheimer, Darwin's break with religious belief was dramatic, but not traumatic.
WHEN Charles Darwin published the Origin of Species in 1859 - described by the late R. B. Freeman as "certainly the most important biological book ever written" - he believed that the theory of evolution by natural selection dealt solely with changes which had occurred in time to organisms on this planet ("secondary causes").
Whatever one's conclusion, it is clear, as Alvar Ellegârd acutely observes, that to the genera...

The theory that revolutionized scientific thinking should make a more exciting movie than "Creation.
Billed as "the true story of Charles Darwin," the movie suggests that he was mightily torn by how his theory of evolution might affect Christianity and its teaching that all creation was made in one week. The trouble is that inner thoughts are difficult to photograph. Director Jon Amiel may be commended for his effort to make an intellectual movie rather than a melodrama. But he has failed to capture the fire of Darwin's inner debate, the conflict with his devoutly Christian wife or the ruckus his theory caused in society.

Probably no living politician has been subjected to more searching media scrutiny than the senior senator from Massachusetts, Edward M. Kennedy. In the twilight of his long career Mr. Kennedy is now the subject of Last Lion: The Fall and Rise of Ted Kennedy (Simon & Schuster, $28, 464 pages), a joint biography by staff reporters of the Boston Globe, under the editorial guidance of Peter S. Canellos.
The result, against all odds, is a readable, relatively objective study of the once most-vilified man in contemporary American politics.
